TO FLY WITH THE SOUL
RICARDO SANCHEZ
MAY | 2024
PRESS CLIPPINGS
“Art is an unpredictable thing, it’s discovery, it’s an in invention of life. And anyone who says that writing poetry is suffering is lying: it’s good, even when writing about a painful thing. Poetry transfigures things, even when you are in an abyss. Art exists because life isn’t good enough.”
Ferreira Gullar
“To fly with the soul”, that’s the name of the show and of the proposal presented when knowing Ricardo Sanchez’s artworks.
Most of the artworks use an image transfer technique of authorial photographs. The urban landscape, the city, and its buildings, can be observed as well as the horizons and the clouds.
In the artist’s records: portuguese limestones, tiles, cinder blocks and tools are the pages of unique books, where powerful and transformative visual poetry is written.
In the curatorial clipping, focusing on the act of flying, we aim to highlight a possibility given the maturity achieved by the artist in his production, with a narrative both inspiring and provocative.
The paintings prove the point when dialoging with the photographs, therefore offering an interesting discussion.
For a long time, the role of photography was at discussion in art, if perhaps it would replace paintings. Nowadays, this issue is settled and, as can be observed in Ricardo’s creative process, a new way to analyze the photographs and how to look at the world around us.
When showcasing some of the artworks created specially for this show, we hope that the viewers can allow themselves to contemplate each work, perceiving the grandeur in each scene, no matter in which size it’s portrayed. The artist seeks, from the first camera record, to capture that which his soul perceives, way beyond what his eyes see.
Adopting a procedure in which the image is processed in many ways and various mediums, Ricardo reconstructs his own poetics, without renouncing the premises that that defines his work. While looking to what is closest to the individual, one can also see what is closest to humanity.
In his technical and poetic abundance, his work translates the 21st century and confirms the maxim of Ferreira Gullar: art exists because life isn’t enough.
May we, then, be able to fly with the soul.
