AT SEA LEVEL
PEDRO AFONSO SILVA

PRESS CLIPPINGS

It’s from the most distant memories from childhood, embedded by the sea and drawing, rescued with great nostalgia, that the artist Pedro Afonso Silva leads the works of the show.

Born and raised in Lisbon, the sea had a significant impact on the artist’s childhood, as he observed the signaling buoys in the sea and the lighthouses on the coast, he brings these elements in his work as a ‘repetition to memorize’.

His artistic research revolves around sketching and spontaneous drawing, considered by the artist as a pure and dynamic form that contrasts with the graphic perfection with which he had to deal with throughout his trajectory as a graphic designer. His drawings are composed of simple lines on voluminous medias, which are as important in his work as what’s being represented on them.

The artist proposes the discussion between what is fact and what is obvious, based on our comprehension that the Earth is spherical, which crashes against the visually straight line of the horizon, presented through the dialogue between the two-dimensional drawing and the three-dimensional media.

The show showcases the repetition through these sea objects of his childhood as if a daydream, a recollection, and a serial memorizing that lead us to ask ourselves whether “we see as we know or we know based on what we see”, says the artist.
