“O pano que habita”(‘The cloth I live in’), is a result, in 66 canvasses, of the main research and influences of the Rio-based artist Christian Machado’s a current artistic process.
Using cotton made cleaning cloths, stiffened with an adhesive compound, he creates a textured surface that is then applied onto cardboard, serving as media to oil paintings, recontextualizing and transforming the value of the materials commonly considered as of low value.
The audiovisual is one of the most evident influences the artist has. The calligraphy is painted in a “continuous movement” with broad brushstrokes, forming a cinematic “sequence shot”, constructing a script of scenes that together tell the story of each painting.
Another significant influence is music, which makes itself present in Machado’s artwork in a parallel between pictorial abstraction, jazz improvisation, and the abstract expressionism of the New York School.
Beyond these two influences, Christian Machado’s process draws from action painting and its broad gestures, gaining inspiration by artists like Lee Krasner and De Kooning.
This intersection, a mix of diverse artistic languages, cinema, visual arts, and music, applied to everyday materials invites the viewer to discover new meanings.
