18 has the pleasure to present the first Brazilian show of the Mexican artist Frida Harari Sitton. The show “ECO”(‘ECHO’) brings two moments of her path and experience. The first moment consists of the series “Infinito e Plexi”(‘Infinite and Plexi’), made of acrylic mirrors, plays overlapped colors and light stimulating the concept of reflection in the viewer.

Frida’s arrival in São Paulo initiates the second moment. With lightness, movement, and depth, she created mobiles, an ode to joy and color that defines her artistic production.

However, the production for this show, which at that moment was still untitled, was paused by a breast cancer diagnosis that, when investigated, led to the discovery of a congenital heart issue. Frida, then, rethinks her way of working as an artist.

“Just as silence is essential to music, the absence, void, transparency, and darkness are elements that accentuate, give life, and define the ‘protagonism’ of the plastic elements outside the artwork”, says Frida Harari Sitton.

This reflection brought new sensory insights, acceptance, and the embracing of her own vulnerability, triggering the recognition of her mortality and the celebration of life. This is how the last pieces were created, turning the show into an intimate journey.

ECHO, from the greek êchos and oîkos, ‘sound’ and ‘home’ respectively, represents repetition, reflection, visual echos, and it’s also present at the medical term that had been part of Frida’s life experience during the production for the show.

The pieces in the series ECHO, which names the show, address life and death, talking about facing the tangible fears and turning them into strength. The holes in the flawlessly smooth surface reveal another reality through texture, aiming to show to the observer both their most idealized and vulnerable ‘self’.

The artworks in the show are a celebration of life.
