ANDRÉ FELIPE

AF_nova_PB.jpg

André Felipe, born in São Paulo, has a bachelor's degree in Architecture from the ‘Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie’, but never practiced the profession, instead he worked as a graphic designer and as a director of advertising art for over 30 years.

His fascination with visual arts began in his teenage years because of record sleeves and art books, which helped with sharpening his eye to compose with his own aesthetic. When graduated, André Felipe was challenged when showing his architectonic drawings to a construction company, to create a real estate business’ pamphlet. This event led him to design and advertisement, deepening his graphic eye and his visual communication techniques.

His work was built over his experience and technical expertise of how society deals with broadly known signs, knowledge he acquired in his 30 years working in the communication business. Through displacement, filled with an irony that comes from the artist’s personality, he proposes a discussion on how we deal with things out of place and our reaction.

His artistic research is based on the annoyance he feels toward his surroundings, delving into his refined technique and visual repertoire, with a lot of criticism directed to contemporary society through references known to all, without sticking to a specific theme or pre-determined line of work.

Inspired by post-war art and the beginning of contemporary art, from pop to minimalism and conceptual art, the artist has a broad range of references. From the simplification of the form and incorporation of mass media’ characteristics like Ed Ruscha, to the geometric shapes inspired by Richard Serra’s sculptures, and the vibrant colors, repetition, and the portrayal of ordinary objects like Andy Warhol.
