JAMES ROWLAND

Perfil.jpg

James Rowland was born in Australia and moved to Scotland while he was still a child, nowadays, he lives in Paraty – Rio de Janeiro. He has a Geophysics degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, United Kingdom, he also did a Designer-Maker course in carpentry at the British furniture school Waters & Acland.

His relationship with art began when he started to explore his will to create and mold ‘without purpose’, letting himself be led by the crude wood, he found freedom searching for shapes without the commission guidelines of the joinery shop’s in which he worked at.

James portrays in his artworks his perception of the trails that time leaves in nature and its relationship with human beings, in other words, how our relationship with nature changed overtime. These two focal points of his research originated in his childhood in Scotland, impacted by the seasons, delimited by the biomes, and the mystery of the neolithic Stonehenge.

The relationship between time and natural cycles appears as biomorphic shapes sculpted in the wood as scars embedded in the scenery throughout texture and embossments, aiming to transpose the natural beauty of these passages, James seeks to capture the imagery of natural fissures and hollows, in a maximum ode of: ‘nothing can resist the passage of the time’.

Another recurring theme in his work is the influence that our relationship with nature has on our folklore belief standpoint, stories that comes from a time that that interaction was more abundant than today, a scarceness that molds and leads us to our current stage.

The type of wood used is intuitive and varies to each artwork, from a specific plan that, to the artist, demands a certain wood color and texture, or from the impulse to create something from scraps, searching between metal and wood color a way to highlight their beauty and shape.

Affected in his teenage years by the curves and organic shapes of Antoni Gaudí’s nature, James Rowland brings a sculptural repertoire with architectural references, searching for Andy Goldsworthy’s true connection between nature and art, and the impossible-to-ignore presence of Anish Kapoor.

James Rowland has participated of solo and group shows, besides winning awards and nominations for his artworks.
