NOT SAMO emerges from the idea of bringing forward artworks and artists that we believe to have a consistent work, with great potential, that alignes with 18’s profile.

 

“SAMO” is one of the most well-known abbreviations in the art world. Created by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Al Diaz, it was graffitied in the streets and walls of New York in the early 80’s, the tag was used by artists to question the status quo of the time. The monogram is an abbreviation of the phrase “same old shit”.

 

NOT was added to Basquiat’s expression to propose that it is not the same “old shit” as before. Intending to break the art circuit’s bubble, the idea behind the annual group show NOT SAMO is bringing something different from what’s usually seen, seeking artists from various parts of Brazil, with different techniques and lines of work.
