NOT SAMO
GROUP SHOW
JULY | 2024
PRESS CLIPPINGS
The group show NOT SAMO features 37 artists and over 100 artworks of various techniques, intending to present a broad view without conforming to a specific theme.
“SAMO” is one of the most well-known abbreviations in the art world. Created by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Al Diaz, it was graffitied in the streets and walls of New York in the early 80’s, the tag was used by artists to question the status quo of the time. The monogram is an abbreviation of the phrase “same old shit”.
NOT was added to Basquiat’s expression to propose that it is not the same “old shit” as before. Intending to break the art circuit’s bubble, the idea behind the annual group show NOT SAMO is to bring something different from what is usually seen, seeking artists from various parts of Brazil, with different techniques and lines of work.
This edition of the group show features:
AL.MA; ALEX KÖRNER; CARMEN GARCIA; CAROLINA PRADO PINTO; CLÁU EPIPHANIO; CLAU PARANHOS; D.HELL; DANIEL KENZO; FABIOLLA CANEDO; GAB MAFRA; GEORGIA ABDALLA HANNUD; HELOIZE ROSA; ISABELA JAHA; IVONETE CAVALCANTE; JOÃO FRANÇA; JOSÉ GUILHERME BERARDO; LÍGIA TEIXEIRA; LILIAN WALKER; LUCAS WILD; MARAISA MARQUES; MÁRCIO PETINI; MARIA LUIZA TORAL; MARIANNE LÉPINE; MARIÊ; MARIO CAMARGO; NATHALIA TIVERON; OLAVO TENÓRIO; PAULO KURAZUMI; PAULODETARSO; PEDRO LEOBONS; RAFA DIÅS; REGINA PESSOA; RENATA BARRETO; ROBERTO MÜLLER; SHEE GOMES; THAYRONI ARRUDA; VINICIUS MONTE.
Without a defined theme, the group show presents over 100 artworks, including sculptures, interventions, photography, embroidery, collage and textile collage, paintings onto canvasses and paper and wood, drawings and more. There is also a wide range of themes such as displacement of urban art, representation of different bodies, the feminine, social critique, exploration of materials and Brazilian cultural records. Not focusing on where the artists are from, their trajectory or career stages, NOT SAMO seeks diverse works and names to represent what 18 believes in.
